Commenting on the recent article, the Los Angeles area bariatric surgeon explains that the recent data is proof that weight loss can reduce painful joint stress, and slow the pain from advancing even if it has already begun to occur.

Weight loss surgery with Dr. Feiz can provide patients with a wide range of health benefits.

Many patients with pain that may have impacted their mobility prior to bariatric surgery often praise their weight loss surgery for helping them slim down and move freely with much less discomfort.

According to an article published December 9th by the Chicago Tribune, a new study has shown that losing a significant amount of excess weight can slow the degeneration of cartilage in patient’s knees. The data showed both that those who lost weight experienced less degeneration than those who didn’t, but also that the results were better the more weight each patient lost. According to Los Angeles bariatric surgeon Michael Feiz, M.D., F.A.C.S., this data matches well with the firsthand results that he has seen with his weight loss surgery patients. He explains that many patients with pain that may have impacted their mobility prior to bariatric surgery often praise their weight loss surgery for helping them slim down and move freely with much less discomfort.

Dr. Feiz also points to another important aspect of the study, that these positive effects can occur even after knee degeneration has begun. He says that some people who have started to develop knee pain may assume that seeking a solution is futile because their pain has already begun. Yet, Dr. Feiz explains, by immediately taking action, they can stop the pain from getting much worse. The article notes that the purpose of this intervention is not necessarily to reverse the pain, but to stop “patients from progressing to end-stage surgical knee arthritis.” Dr. Feiz suggests that it is not uncommon for patients to simply view the progression of pain as inevitable, and simply allow it to advance until they eventually elect a knee replacement surgery on one or both of their knees.

Dr. Feiz also adds that, while this particular study is focused on how weight loss can prevent the advance of a disease rather than reverse it, there are a great many other studies that show how weight loss surgery can actually send a number of dangerous diseases into remission. He explains that type 2 diabetes is the most discussed of these diseases that can be reversed with weight loss surgery, with data showing that successful weight loss surgery can both send type 2 diabetes into remission, but also prevent the development of the disease for those that are currently considered at-risk for contracting it in the near-future.

Regardless of what advantages a patient hopes to gain by losing weight, Dr. Feiz concludes that the data shows time and time again that weight loss surgery is the most effective, scientifically-proven method for losing a significant portion of one’s excess weight.
