New Study on Link Between Poor Sleep and Excessive Eating Highlights the Hormonal Benefits of Sleeve Gastrectomy Procedures, says Dr. Feiz and Associates
(PRWEB) June 17, 2015 -- What do a good night’s sleep and a sleeve gastrectomy weight loss surgery have in common? As reported on June 3, 2015 by Latinos Health, a study at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln showed that inadequate or poor quality sleep tends to lead to excessive eating. Moreover, the study notes that one likely cause of the phenomenon is that lack of sleep can cause the body to increase levels of ghrelin, a hunger hormone which, in excess, has been widely associated with obesity and which tends to increase as patients lose weight. Leading Los Angeles area bariatric surgeon, Michael Feiz, M.D., F.A.C.S., comments that this hormone discussed in the study is the same hormone that makes the bariatric sleeve gastrectomy procedure so effective. The procedure, which removes roughly 75 to 85 percent of the stomach, tends to greatly reduce the body’s production of ghrelin, also greatly reducing the persistent pangs of appetite which can make weight loss extremely difficult.
“We’ve been extremely pleased by the results our sleeve gastrectomy patients have been reporting, and the nationwide popularity of the procedure reflects that,” said Dr. Feiz and Associates. “For the past several years, the total number of bariatric surgeries has grown every year, but the percentage of those procedures that were sleeve gastrectomies has increased even more rapidly. Indeed, by 2013 the procedure accounted for some 42 percent of all weight loss surgeries, according to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. The procedure appears to be the most widely obtained of all weight loss operations.”
Dr. Feiz and his team also point out that an added benefit of sleeve gastrectomy is that it is a very viable option for gastric band patients who are not achieving the weight loss results they had hoped for following a banding procedure, but aren’t yet ready to give up on their weight loss journey. “Another reason that the sleeve has become so popular with our patients, both amongst new patients or band patients considering a revision, is that it does not involve implanting any foreign objects into the body. Even the most successful gastric band patients need to schedule regular trips to the doctor to have their band adjusted to ensure that it does not begin to slip or erode into the stomach. The sleeve gastrectomy does not require regular adjustments that may cause dramatic changes to a patient’s hunger levels,” said Dr. Feiz and Associates.
Dr. Feiz and Associates invites obese patients who are interested in learning whether a sleeve gastrectomy or another weight loss procedure is right for them to contact the medical office at (800) 868-5946 to inquire about a free informational seminar.
