Dr. Feiz and Associates Answer October’s ‘Patient Submitted Question of the Month’: “How Permanent is Weight Loss Surgery”

He notes that some of these procedures, such as the sleeve gastrectomy, are entirely permanent and cannot be reversed once a portion of the stomach is removed. On the other hand, the gastric band procedure is entirely reversible. In fact, Dr. Feiz notes that Lap Band removals are becoming increasingly common in recent years as patients decide that, in their particular case, the band’s effectiveness is not what they were hoping for.
While many patients happily keep their band in for many years after their procedure, Dr. Feiz explains that they still need to go in for regular adjustment appointments to ensure the band is working properly. He explains that the gastric sleeve, however, does not need any adjustments due to the fact that no foreign objected are implanted into the body that would need to be adjusted.
