Salt Lake City Physician Recognized for ‘Outstanding Contributions’ to Field of Eyelid and Facial Plastic Surgery
Salt Lake City, Utah (PRWEB) November 07, 2014 -- City Physician, Richard L. Anderson, MD, FACS, the ASOPRS Outstanding Contribution Award during their October 17, 2014, Scientific Symposium in Chicago, IL.
The Salt Lake City Physician was honored to receive the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) Outstanding Contribution Award. The prestigious honor, “in recognition of longstanding contributions to the society,” was awarded for his work developing and publishing in medical literature many of the best procedures used today in Oculoplastic/Facial Cosmetic Surgery. He says that of the many honors and awards that he has received this one means the most to him as it is given by his peers for the profession he loves and has worked to create. He states he shares this honor with the many doctors he has trained and those they have trained worldwide in Oculoplastic/Facial Plastic surgery. He also credits his superior office staff that does the hardest and most important work for any doctor and shares his dedication and passion for patient care. He thanks his lovely wife Susan, and his 3 children who have always supported him and his passion for his profession.

Dr. Richard Anderson graduated AOA from the University of Iowa Medical School. He completed surgical internship and ophthalmology residency at the University of Iowa. He completed fellowships in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at Albany Medical Center and the University of California San Francisco. He returned to the University of Iowa in July 1976 to begin his academic career and became full professor and chief of the Division in July 1982. In 1984 he moved to Salt Lake City to begin private practice and was appointed Professor and Chief of the Division of Ophthalmic Plastic and Facial Cosmetic surgery at the University of Utah, which position he maintained until 1999. In 1999 he became medical director of Oculoplastic Surgery, Inc in Salt Lake City, UT. Dr. Anderson started AO Surgical Arts in 2014 and is medical director and senior partner of that medical practice. He is board certified and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American College of Surgeons.
At the University of Iowa and then at the University of Utah, Dr. Anderson developed oculoplastic divisions with the largest volumes in the country. He has trained over 70 U.S. and foreign fellows, many of whom direct oculoplastic programs around the country and world. He has published over 300 scientific papers, over 100 book chapters and 3 books in oculoplastic, facial plastic, and cosmetic surgery. Dr. Anderson has developed many modern day techniques in oculoplastic, facial plastic, and cosmetic surgery. He has delivered over 1000 papers at scientific (national and international) meetings. He has been or is presently on the editorial board of 11 journals in the field, including Archives of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery.
In the past 35 years Dr. Anderson has been named to the top of his field by a number of organizations. In 1991 Good Housekeeping Magazine and Reader’s Digest Magazine named him to the best 400 Doctors in America, as the only Oculoplastic Surgeon named to that group. In 1998 Dr. Anderson was honored by Ophthalmology Times as the top doctor in oculoplastic surgery. Dr. Anderson received the Lifetime Achievement Award for greatest contributions to facial cosmetic surgery in 2010 by the Multi-Specialty Foundation. He was also named “Best in the Beehive” for eyelid and facial cosmetic surgery by Salt Lake Magazine in 2012. In 2014 he received the Outstanding Contribution Award from the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in recognition of longstanding contributions to the Society. He has received many other honors and awards within his field including The Heed Foundation Award for outstanding contributions to ophthalmology, The American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award, Senior Honor Award and Lifetime Honor Award as well as The Lester Jones and Wendell Hughes Awards. Dr. Anderson has been a member of many medical advisory boards including the Benign Essential Blepharospasm Research Foundation and is on the board of directors of the aforementioned foundation. He is a past vice president of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and a member of the Orbital Society.
