The National Center for Victims of Crime reports 20 percent of girls and five percent of boys are victims of childhood sexual abuse; 75 percent of the adolescents who were victimized were perpetrated upon by someone they know well.

Author Dusana Michaels understands the preceding statistic all too well, having been molested by a family member as a child. Michaels’ new book “Chopping the Onion” (published by Balboa Press) is one resilient woman’s journey through recovery after enduring the unthinkable.

Michaels has dedicated her life to overcoming the trauma she faced at an early age by addressing issues one by one and empowering others to do the same. Michaels’ book teaches about practicing forgiveness and finding self-worth following a situation of abuse.

“My perpetrator took my childhood,” Michaels said, “but my adulthood belongs to me.”

Michaels hopes offering her perspective will help other victims of abuse know they are not alone and recovery is possible.
