Prova Education Features New Educational Series on Binge Eating Disorder in Response to DSM-5 Updates
Fort Washington, PA (PRWEB) March 19, 2014 -- Due to recent changes to the DSM-5, the need to understand Binge Eating Disorder (BED) has never been greater. As of 2013, the DSM-5 officially recognizes BED as a mental disorder and has updated the diagnostic criteria, leading researchers to believe the number of patients diagnosed with BED will increase greatly. Prova Education, a medical education company with a focus in primary care, has launched a Binge Eating Disorder education initiative to address the new education needs of healthcare professionals across the country.
This condition is especially serious because of its health implications—those afflicted with BED report higher than normal rates of both anxiety, depression, obesity, and suicidal thoughts. “Healthcare professionals need to understand the new BED guidelines in order to help their patients cope with all aspects of the disorder,” said Dr. Tracy S. Cummings, MD, and psychiatrist at the Lindner Center of HOPE.
Research shows that despite the prevalence of BED, many significant gaps in knowledge currently exist among healthcare professionals. “The goal of this educational initiative is to close those gaps,” said Dr. Cummings. “We want physicians to be knowledgeable and confident in the diagnostic tools available to them and all patient treatment options, including diet changes, behavior modifications, and medication.”
While expert faculty, such as Dr. Cummings, have already spoken about BED at several of Prova Education’s live meetings throughout the United States, Prova Education is also launching a series of online CME segments to further educate healthcare professionals. “The initiative will include four comprehensive segments once it is fully launched,” said Dik Barsamian, President of The Omnia-Prova Education Collaborative. “Physicians will now be able to access this timely education across a variety of channels at their own convenience.”
