Startup Introduces Low-Cost Device to Prevent Parents From Leaving Children in the Car
DOVER, Del. (PRWEB) May 22, 2017 -- Elepho® Inc., a Delaware-based startup, has developed a low-cost, patent-pending device to help prevent hot-car deaths in babies and small children. The device, named eClip®, is small enough to attach to a child’s car seat strap. With eClip’s accompanying app, an alert will promptly remind the user to check the backseat as they exit their vehicle. Elepho’s team launched the eClip on Kickstarter today with a funding goal of $50,000. The team hopes the eClip’s low cost will attract consumers and help make child safety monitors, such as this, more accessible.

Elepho’s eClip is constantly monitoring. Using the native iOS or Android app, eClip will sound and display alerts on a user’s smartphone when they move around 15 feet (five meters) away from their vehicle.
It is often a misconception that only “bad” parents leave their children behind in their cars. However, this is not generally the case. Whether it’s due to lack of sleep, change in routine or accidental negligence, parents, grandparents and caregivers can sometimes forget sleeping children in the back of their vehicles. Often referred to as Forgotten Baby Syndrome (FBS), hot-car deaths claimed the lives of 39 children last year in the United States alone, with similar statistics in other developed countries.
Hyperthermia is often the main cause of death in a baby or child when the body temperature rises greatly above normal temperatures. In addition to reminding parents of their child in the backseat, eClip monitors the temperature around the car seat to ensure the area is safe and comfortable for their child. If the temperature falls below or above a user-specified range of 59-86°F (15-30°C), the app will promptly alert users. The temperature range can also be adjusted by the user and, in future versions, the app will also be able to send alerts to a user’s spouse or to the child’s grandparents and caregivers.
The Elepho team has a clear goal of zero hot-car deaths. With eClip, parents have a digital assistant to keep them on their toes and mindful of their child in the back of the car.
