NEW YORK (PRWEB) August 04, 2014
In 2001, sculptor Houston Conwill, architect Joseph DePace and poet Estella Conwill Majozo unveiled their new monument, the New Ringshout Cosmogram, at the African Burial Grounds in New York City. The General Service Administration African Burial Ground Project, of which The New Ringshout is part of, was recognized by the White House with the Preserve America Presidential Award in 2008.
Majozo now releases a companion book to the monument she helped design. “Ringshout!: A National Rite of Passage For the New and Promised Generation” (published by WestBow Press) celebrates African American culture and inspires the next generation to love and embrace their heritage.
Packed with history and cultural traditions, “Ringshout!” depicts American history from an African-American perspective. Majozo discusses the horrors of slavery and how the oppressed rose up. She pays tribute to the many essential contributions that African Americans have made to the United States, shaping what it is today.
The book not only educates but inspires as well. Majozo hopes to encourage the next generation to step into their sacred purposes and become mature, enlightened and compassionate human beings.
Praise for “Ringshout!”:
“‘Ringshout!’ is a cultural call to action for the twenty-first century. Firmly rooted in the African American experience, it opens the door to participation across racial and ethnic lines. ‘Being at home in your own cultural skin but not being afraid to let others in.’ It is my vision and hope that ‘Ringshout!’ will become the model for best practices for youth development programs across the country.” — Priscilla Hancock Cooper, Interim President and CEO Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
