Primary school children ready for semi-finals of EuroTalk’s national language competition
London (PRWEB UK) 10 September 2014 -- The Junior Language Challenge is an annual competition run by EuroTalk, which invites primary school age children to learn up to three languages over seven months. Over 1,100 children learned Italian in the first round, using EuroTalk’s online language software, with the top scorers from each region of the country progressing to the semi-finals. These will be held at schools around the UK from 11th to 19th September.
At the semi-finals, the children will play Japanese language games from EuroTalk’s learning program on iPads, and the top three will continue to the final, for which they will learn a third language (to be announced at the semi-finals).
Cranmore School in West Horsley, Surrey, are hosting the semi-final for London (South) on 12th September. Head of Modern Foreign Languages, Nadège Meneghin, said, “Our students love the JLC – it’s a great opportunity for them to play with various languages and learn in a fun way. We’re excited to welcome the semi-finalists at Cranmore for another nail-biting competition!”
The Junior Language Challenge is also a charity project, which has raised nearly £6,000 for onebillion, an organisation creating educational apps to teach basic maths, reading and English to children in developing countries. The money raised will purchase 30 iPads, which will be used by over 300 children each day in Malawi.
“Here in the UK we tend to take our education for granted, but in other countries learning isn’t always so easy to come by,” says Richard Howeson, EuroTalk’s chairman and founder of the JLC. “onebillion’s terrific apps are already making a huge difference to the lives of children in Malawi, and we’re proud to support them in their mission to reach one billion children worldwide.”
The JLC semi-finals will take place in Chepstow, West Horsley, Stockton-on-Tees, Nottingham, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Wokingham, Sandbach, Bradford and London. The final will take place at Language Show Live, London, in October.
