GTT Group, Inc. Releases October 2016 Patent Transaction Market Outlook Including the Q3 2016 Patent Market Index
Portland, OR (PRWEB) October 18, 2016 -- Global Technology Transfer Group, Inc. (GTT Group), the world leader in patent transaction and patent related advisory services, today makes available the Q3 2016 Patent Market Index (PMI®) and Patent Licensing Index (PLI®) in the October 2016 Patent Transaction Market Report.
The PMI® lost 10.76 points during the seasonal Q3 downturn, representing a 10.7% decline. GTT Group forecasted this decline in the previous Patent Transaction Market Report. The PMI score of 89.86 is below the previous year’s Q3 level and is the lowest recorded on the index since Q4 2013.
The Q3 2016 decline follows the continued market realities of fewer patent transactions and lower asset counts. Secondary patent assignments dropped below the year on year transfers compared to Q3 2015.
“The Q3 PMI decline mirrors market realities, which include fewer patent transactions, and smaller asset counts,” according to Michael Lubitz, CEO and Chairman of GTT Group. “We expect the 4th Quarter to remain rather flat with any uptick in the PMI reflected in the first quarter of 2017.”
The PLI® (Patent License Index) behaved contrary to the PMI and secondary market trends, rising 20% over Q3 2015. This represents the highest index level since Q4 2014 and makes up for the lower range of the past year. The PLI significantly outperformed the S&P 500, more than making up for the previous quarter loss and showing a higher return than the S&P 500 over the past 12 months. More detail on the performance and quarterly acquisitions of companies composing the PLI is available in the quarterly report.
Google is the only company appearing on both the acquirer and seller sections of the Most Active Deal Maker list in Q3 2016. RPX remained as the top acquirer of the Most Active Deal Maker list for Q3 2016, followed by Intellectual Ventures, Acacia, Google, IP Bridge, and Philips in a five-way tie. Google headed the list of sellers on the Most Active Deal Maker list for Q3 2016, followed by Toshiba, Broadcom, Panasonic, and SK Telecom.
