GTT Group, Inc. Releases September 2016 Patent Transaction Market Outlook Including the Q2 2016 Patent Market Index
Portland, OR (PRWEB) October 04, 2016 -- Global Technology Transfer Group, Inc. (GTT Group), the world leader in patent transaction and patent related advisory services, today makes available the Q2 2016 Patent Market Index (PMI®) and Patent Licensing Index (PLI®) in the September 2016 Patent Transaction Market Report.
The PMI® returned to the same range displayed during 2015, landing at 100.62, an 8.5% decline. This activity matches the trend of previous 10 years with a Q1 gain boosted by year end recording lags and a Q2 return to more typical levels. While not entirely erasing the gain seen in Q1, the Q2 index was the largest single-quarter decline seen since Q3 2014.
The PMI continues to match the market preferences for patentable subject matter, lowered patent value/damage calculations, and highly selective buying practices. These market conditions have maintained an index average in the 100-105 range and there could be additional decline in the third quarter. Secondary patent assignments also returned to the range of 2015.
“The Q2 2016 PMI produced the largest quarterly decrease since the third quarter of 2014 and highlights current market volatility,” says Michael Lubitz, CEO and Chairman of GTT Group. “We believe there is a high probability for further downward movement in the third quarter as transaction momentum shifts to the fourth quarter.”
The PLI® (Patent License Index) followed the trend of the PMI and secondary markets, declining modestly after experiencing a significant mid-quarter spike. The PLI lost ground to the S&P 500, but remained in the steady index range of previous quarters since the index introduction in 2013 even with the Q2 decline. RPX remained as the top Most Active Deal Maker for Q2 2016, followed by Intellectual Ventures.
