The Glenholme School Welcomed Student-Speaker Ally Del Monte for Bullying Prevention Awareness Month

With New England's pleasant crisp weather, stunning color with vivid skies and seasonal aromas, it is a season that is treasured. For children in school, the season marks the common adjustment to a new school year and highlights many serious issues for young people as the intensity of social concerns continue to weigh heavily on many of our nation's youth. The autumn month of month of October is National Bullying Prevention Month.
Ally Del Monte, a teen who faced serious adversity and school bullying tells her story to educate the students and faculty at The Glenholme School. Ally has turned her story of heartbreak into one about the unbreakable human spirit. After five years of generating awareness and helping others with her various writings including her blog, losergurl.com. Ally earned national recognition and was featured on several television programs including ABC’s We Day broadcast on August 21. She was also featured in People Magazine and in several Connecticut newspapers. Now, Ally Del Monte takes her inspirational message directly to young students.
In late October, Ally Del Monte shared her story and powerful actions to overcome her struggle with peer-pressure, bullying, depression and more with the young people at Glenholme. She conveyed how to take a proactive approach when faced with difficult situations and how to stay strong using her #BeBrave message. Ally also illuminated the importance of being a good friend and being accepting of others and their differences. As she noted, “Everyone has the opportunity and the obligation to be kind.”
Students genuinely related to and connected with Ally Del Monte and her message. After the presentation, students expressed their appreciation and understanding, and opened up about their personal experiences. A number of students also asked very insightful questions about ways to handle difficult situations and #BeBrave.
Ally Del Monte’s message resonates strongly with Glenholme's character education program introduced in the mid-90's resulting in a sustained positive school climate. After more than 20 years, the school is a recognized leader for character education. At Glenholme, everyone plays a vital and active role in the school community to exhibit, demonstrate, and teach the core values of honesty, respect, responsibility, fairness, kindness, and community service. The school setting is effective in supporting the academic, social, and emotional development of students at the school.
