The Alliance for Clinical Research Excellence and Safety (ACRES) announced today that Dr. Sandor Kerpel-Fronius, Senior Scientific Advisor in Clinical Pharmacology, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary, has joined ACRES management team as Vice-President of Global Development.

Dr. Kerpel-Fronius brings wide-ranging experience to ACRES. In addition to many years in clinical drug development in Oncology in Austria, Germany and Switzerland and a General Director role at Hungary’s drug regulatory agency, the Hungarian National Institute of Pharmacy, he has most recently served as Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy of the Semmelweis University. Dr. Kerpel-Fronius is also on the Executive Board of the IMI-PharmaTrain.

In his new role, Dr. Kerpel-Fronius will assume leadership of ACRES global outreach activities, including the ongoing development of ACRES regional and in-country affiliates. He will work to establish a network of regional coordinating centers in Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, and with interested countries to formalize co-development agreements to establish a network of national affiliate organizations, tapping into their local knowledge, networks and resources.

Currently, a national affiliate has been established in South Korea through a strategic relationship with the Korean National Enterprise for Clinical Trials (KoNECT), and initial organizing efforts have begun in Canada, Mexico, Columbia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Bulgaria and Saudi Arabia.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Kerpel–Fronius join the ACRES leadership team at this critical time”, noted ACRES president and CEO, Dr. Greg Koski. “Interest in becoming part of this collaborative global initiative is rapidly growing in countries around the world, and as we continue to develop the shared infrastructure to support it, we must have someone with Sandor’s knowledge and passion to work with our colleagues to coordinate development of the organizational framework globally.”

Dr. Kerpel-Fronius acknowledged the magnitude and complexity of his new responsibilities. “While technology may make the world seem smaller, the multitude of cultural, economic and regulatory factors that must be addressed to build any true global system can seem daunting—but other global endeavors, such as air transport, telecommunications and information technology have shown us the way forward, and the benefits for all make it worthwhile—clinical research is no exception, and I look forward to the challenge.”
