Care Packages for Active Heroes Collected by Veteran Gerry Beavers
Louisville, KY (PRWEB) March 31, 2017 -- With Memorial Day fast approaching on May 29, veteran Gerry Beavers, Executive Director of HomeWell Senior Care of Louisville, is hosting a donation drive to benefit Active Heroes. Active Heroes mission is to support all U.S. military service members, veterans and their families through physical, educational and emotional programs in an effort to eliminate suicide. Beavers, in conjunction with Student Veterans of America Chapter 227 at Sullivan University, will be collecting items for Active Heroes’ cabin retreats. Beavers was a member of Chapter 227 while getting his MBA and then sponsored the organization for three years after.
Those wanting to donate can stop by HomeWell Senior Care located at 3101 Breckenridge Lane, Suite 1B, Louisville, KY. Items needed include toilet paper, paper towels, dish sponges, all-purpose cleaners, Windex, Swiffer dusters, hand towels, floor cleaner and laundry detergent.
“Being a caregiver and serving my country for 21 years, I have a special place in my heart for our veterans,” said Beavers, a former Assistant Professor of Military Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. “Some have come back broken and need our help. The very least we can do is give them a hand when they need it. I know Louisville and I know this city will band together to help out those in need.”
In 2012, the Department of Veterans Affairs’ study on veteran suicide concluded that 22 veterans a day take their own lives. Now, a new report from 2014 shows the number reduced to 20 veterans a day thanks to national charities such as Active Heroes, which aims to further reduce this number.
Active Heroes has national activities and locations that are geared towards reducing post-traumatic stress. It is also building a Military Family Retreat Center that will support veterans and their families from every state with unique programs and healing areas.
