Infrastructure Solutions, Inc. (ISI) a leading provider of IT infrastructure assessment and optimization software products and services, announces the addition of a Server Consolidation to IBM System z Capability. Linux on System z is the collective term for the Linux operating system compiled to run on IBM mainframes, especially System z machines.

Recognizing that IBM's System z can be a low-cost platform for consolidation of Linux systems as well as implementation of private or hybrid cloud's, ISI has developed modeling capabilities for the analysis of Linux systems being consolidated to IBM z/Linux.

Linux on System z offers the flexibility of running Linux with the advantages of mainframe hardware. Using virtualization, several smaller servers can be combined onto one mainframe, gaining the benefits of centralization, while allowing specialized servers from the virtualization support, which can lower operating costs.

“Research shows that the consolidation to z/Linux and be a significant cost reduction even if the customer is not a current System Z users, says Susan Eustis,” President and Senior Analyst, WinterGreen Research. “Key factors include reduction in staffing and maintenance costs.”

“Recently, we worked with a client to evaluate 39 Linux workloads as candidates for consolidation based on CPU, RAM, Network, and Disk utilization. We used the ISI’s Server Consolidation feature to model all 39 to a consolidated platform," says Willard (Bill) Cecchi, President, ISI. “On thex86 Platform, we were able to help the client consolidate from 78 cores to 24 cores. And, on the z196/Linux Platform, they consolidated from 78 cores to 2 (2 IFLs).”
