Addiction Psychiatrist Talks Opioid Overdose Prevention at Independent Educational Consultants Association Conference
New Orleans, LA (PRWEB) October 11, 2016 -- Addiction psychiatrist and chief medical officer of Elements Behavioral Health, David Sack, MD, will share expert insights on approaches for curbing opioid overdoses in young adults at the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) conference in New Orleans.
The four-day conference, taking place Nov. 2-5, is open to IECA members and provides over 50 educational sessions relevant to independent educational consulting professionals. Areas of focus include college, day and boarding school, therapeutic/behavioral topics, graduate school, international study, and the business of consulting. Continuing education credits are available.
Dr. Sack’s presentation, “Preventing Overdose in the Era of Opioids: Strategies and Treatments That Work,” covers the overprescribing of painkillers that has fueled the heroin epidemic, the neurochemistry of opioid addiction, and why certain treatments increase or decrease overdose risk. Attendees will learn about the most current strategies for reducing overdose risk such as using the long-acting injectable naltrexone. Dr. Sack’s presentation takes place on Friday, Nov. 4 from 8:15- 9:30 am.
“At a time when young adults are abusing prescription opioids and overdosing on heroin at a higher rate than any other age group, it’s critical that those who work with them are knowledgeable about this epidemic and the most effective ways to combat it,” said Dr. Sack, who oversees a young adult drug rehab at Promises® in West Los Angeles. “I’m pleased that the IECA is including this important topic in their conference programming.”
