9/11 Widow To Open New STEM Preschool In Manhattan, Commemorating Her Late Husband
New York, NY (PRWEB) March 03, 2015 -- IKEN Science Academy today announced the opening of registration for a first-of-its-kind school that will instruct 3, 4, and 5 year olds by implementing the latest STEM teaching principles. It will be located in a newly built facility located at East 74th street, west of First Avenue on the second floor of the Jan Hus Presbyterian Church.
Monica Iken-Murphy, founder of the IKEN Science Academy, said, “The curriculum will be based on the STEM teaching principles, which is based on educating students in four specific disciplines: science, technology, engineering and mathematics in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. We will teach through traditional methods and encouragement of children’s natural curiosity with investigative play, utilizing developmentally appropriate technology in our classrooms to create an innovative and engaging learning environment.”

Mrs. Iken-Murphy chose the award winning architecture firm Eisner Design to design for a dynamic and interactive space, creating a unique and efficient pre-school environment. The open and inter-active floor plan includes color themes for the different areas, tepee kiosks for separate theme sections, generous colorful wall units for technology support and storage.
The school is scheduled to open in September 2015. Open registration starts today and a limited early bird discount will be given for registrations completed before March 31st.
About the founder - Monica Iken-Murphy is a native New Yorker, a former teacher and a proud mother of two girls, aged 7 and 9. Mrs. Iken-Murphy graduated with a degree in education from Hunter College and was a schoolteacher for several years in the New York public school system and has taught 6th, 7th & 8th grade Science at St. Raymond's in the Bronx. She became one of the leading voices for the relatives of 9/11 victims after losing her husband, Michael Iken, on September 11, 2001 and she remains an active Board member of the National September 11th Memorial & Museum.
On March 5th, 2015 there will be an Open House at 351 E. 74th Street, for Early Registration options.
