New Albany Dentist Offering Zirconium Crowns
New Albany, IN (PRWEB) April 08, 2014 -- Dr. Ronald Receveur is now offering zirconium crowns among his New Albany and Louisville cosmetic dentistry services.
“Zirconia, which is also known as ceramic steel, is really hard,” said Dr. Receveur, who practices in New Albany, Ind., across the Ohio River from Louisville, Ky. “Zirconium crowns can withstand the biting pressure of the front teeth plus the grinding of the back teeth.”
Because so much information (and misinformation) is available to the public, Dr. Receveur wants to provide correct information to anyone looking for New Albany aesthetic dentistry.
A crown is a dental restoration that covers or surrounds a tooth or dental implant, and usually it is fixed to the tooth using traditional dental cement. Crowns can be made out of numerous materials, like ceramic or porcelain, to improve strength or appearance of teeth.
“Zirconium crowns look so close to natural teeth that it is hard to tell the difference, and this is what makes it very useable within dental work,” Dr. Receveur said.
There are many benefits to using zirconium over porcelain, he said.
For instance, porcelain can chip or break. To overcome this, some teeth have metal cores with porcelain shells. However, the teeth have an unnatural look in light and a black gum line.
Zirconium crowns won’t corrode, allow light to pass through like a natural tooth and don’t have the black gum line. They are virtually indestructible, he said.
“Traditional crowns can also make teeth sensitive to heat and cold,” Dr. Receveur said. “Zirconium crowns don’t have that because of a lack of electrical conductivity.”
The tooth is prepared by removing the smallest amount possible. One of the advantages of Zirconium crowns is that it is so strong that less of the tooth has to be removed. The dentist installs a temporary crown while the custom zirconium crowns are made. When the permanent crowns are ready, the temporary crowns are removed and the zirconium crowns are securely fixed in place.
Dr. Receveur said another benefit of zirconium crowns is that less of the original tooth has to be removed.
“A zirconium crown not only replaces a tooth but it can shaped so that it will look better than the one it replaces,” he said. “This is why you can sport a perfect, natural-looking smile.”
Zirconium is biocompatible, so it is safe to stay within your mouth for a long time. It is not rejected by the human body.
