New Novel Takes ‘Inventory’ of Life’s Bittersweet Ironies
New York City (PRWEB) March 13, 2015 -- Taking “Inventory” (published by Xlibris) of the good and bad in life, how hope can spring from tragedies, the stroke of strange coincidences, Wolfgang Rauner pens a tale that embodies the vagaries of fate and its bittersweet ironies. His new novel is drawn from his personal experiences and shows that unexpected futures can be made from the summations of the past, giving people a chance at redemption, if they choose to take it.
The narrative follows Jimmy Castle, a handsome young yet homeless drifter and a pretty, young waitress, as they meet serendipitously in an old diner on the New York waterfront. Feeling sorry for him, she invites him to crash for a few days in her apartment. Two young people from opposite sides of the country, far away from home, are attracted to each other, which leads to an unlikely relationship with a retired, lonely Jewish widower living in an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn. The old man, while helping a friend take inventory in his hardware store, discovers a crate filled with old, discarded rusty nails and screws, which trigger a trove of tragic memories.
Together they embark on a voyage of discovery about a people and a history Jimmy never learned about in school. Eventually falling in love and the thought of marriage, Jimmy goes home to Texas to find the answer to a secret that has haunted him ever since he met Sam, the old man in whose house he finds refuge.
Rauner’s story shows readers that love is always relevant and that people from different backgrounds and disparate parts of the world can come together through unexpected events. A love story wrapped in a Holocaust tale, “Inventory” is Rauner’s first novel and the culmination of a lifelong dream realized at the ripe age of 86.
