Psychiatry, cardiology and family medicine may continue to experience shortages in available talent, according to data released today by Jackson & Coker, the nation’s oldest physician staffing firm.

“Jackson & Coker created the Physician Salary Calculator to help arm both physician recruiters and physicians with the knowledge they need to make informed hiring and employment decisions,” said Sandra Garrett, president of Jackson & Coker. “Illuminating which specialties may continue to experience physician shortages is important for healthcare organizations to know as they formulate their recruitment plans.”

The tool includes total population counts for major specialties, including the percentage of doctors aged 55 and older and percentage of doctors still in their residencies in each. The data reveals that for many specialties there are wide gaps between the number of doctors nearing retirement and the low number of residents who will replace them, raising concerns that physician shortages could continue in the coming years.

The data revealed that:
         • Fifty-one percent of psychiatrists are 55 and older versus only 11 percent that are current psychiatry residents.
         • Fifty percent of current non-invasive cardiologists are 55 and older versus 11 percent in residency.
         • Family medicine has more than a third of its physicians nearing retirement, and only 8 percent are residents coming in to fill those positions.

The Physician Salary Calculator also provides information on annual and hourly compensation, revenue per provider, and population counts for each specialty. Jackson & Coker develops the free tool each year through a collaboration with outside, independent research organizations, giving physician recruiters quick access to the return on investment offered by many physician specialties.

“The calculator gives recruiters a snapshot of today’s current compensation rates and also an outlook of what may happen in the future,” Garrett said.
