Chowchilla Police Chief Jay Varney Completes FBI Course in Quantico, Virginia
Chowchilla, CA (PRWEB) December 12, 2013 -- Chowchilla Chief of Police Jay Varney recently completed the rigorous FBI National Academy, a ten week course of study that "serves to improve the administration of justice in police departments and agencies at home and abroad and to raise law enforcement standards, knowledge, and cooperation worldwide."
The Academy, based in Quantico, Virginia, offers classes across a broad range of study for law enforcement officers, including: Law, forensic science, leadership development, understanding terrorism and terrorist mindsets, health and fitness, behavioral science and communication.
Varney was extended an invitation to this prestigious program after receiving a nomination to attend. Attendees included a wide variety of representatives from law enforcement agencies, including, according to Varney, leaders and managers of state and local police, sheriffs' departments, military police organizations, and federal law enforcement agencies. Varney said, "The FBI program has better equipped me to serve my community as police chief as well as prepared me for the rigors of serving as your Madera County Sheriff."
According to the National Academy, its mission in inviting law enforcement officials to attend these courses is "to support, promote, and enhance the personal and professional development of law enforcement leaders by preparing them for complex, dynamic, and contemporary challenges through innovative techniques, facilitating excellence in education and research, and forging partnerships throughout the world."
The courses are not limited to classroom settings, and attendees are encouraged to participate in fitness programs outside of their coursework. Varney was able to earn a "Blue Brick" by completing 34 miles of swimming in just 21 days time. The distance is significant, as it is 34 miles via the Potomac from Quantico, Virginia to Washington, D.C. By the completion of the Academy, Varney had completed a total of 107 miles in the pool.
The course also allowed time for attendees to travel to historical sites surrounding the D.C. area. Varney was able to travel to the site of the Gettysburg Battlefield, riding through the area while mounted on horseback. "I had just finished reading a book about the battle so it was an awesome experience to see it firsthand," said Varney.
