The economy version, Apple iPhone 5c sales seem to be substantially weaker than expected, according to Wireless Week, Oct 11.
Wireless analyst Jeff Kagan offers his opinion regarding why.
“Trying to understand what is actually happening with Apple sales can be like pulling teeth. The iPhone 5c does not seem to be as successful as planned. So the question today is simple. Is the Apple iPhone 5c not successful because of the design or the price?” asks Tech analyst Jeff Kagan.
“First, the design, while a great device, is not up to typical iPhone standards. Apple’s reason was simple and still valid. Make a lower cost phone to attract a different segment of the market. The problem is Apple didn’t discount the 5c enough from the full 5s price. So for a savings of just $100 or a full iPhone 5s, the average user still prefers the full version,” says Principal analyst Kagan.
“I think the econo-5c version can still be successful if Apple reduces the price further. Will Apple do this or not? Doing so would be an admission they got the price wrong. Will they admit they are not perfect? That’s really the question,” says Kagan.
According to Wireless Week, the iPhone 5c sales have been so weak they are cutting the production in half. That’s the bad news. The good news is the full iPhone 5s which has been having difficulty keeping up with orders will now get extra manpower behind its manufacture.
“Demand for the gold version seems red hot at this point. Until now you could have any color iPhone you wanted as long as it was either black or white. This gold color is the first new color scheme in iPhone’s history,” says Kagan.
“Apple seems to be hitting it out of the park once again with the new iPhone 5s. However the econo-5c is not selling as strongly. Perhaps the price is just too high. Too close to the 5s. Perhaps if Apple drops the price of the 5c sales will pick up. Perhaps if there was a big enough difference in price, more customers would actually pick the econo 5c version. Perhaps,” suggests Kagan.
