Industry Analyst Jeff Kagan on Microsoft Buying Nokia Wireless Phone Patents
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) September 03, 2013 -- Microsoft is buying Nokia wireless phone patents according to MSN News, on Sept 3.
Tech analyst Jeff Kagan offers comment.
“Congratulations to Microsoft on the Nokia acquisition. This move into wireless could be just what Microsoft needs to do in order to get back on the growth path. The next question is, will Microsoft be interested in acquiring a wireless network?” says Industry analyst Jeff Kagan.
“Consolidation is continuing in the wireless space in the US marketplace. First Verizon Vodafone yesterday. Now Microsoft Nokia. Who will be next? We have expected Microsoft to acquire Nokia over the last several years. So this is really not a surprise,” says Wireless analyst Jeff Kagan.
Nokia was weakened in recent years by the sudden success of both Apple iPhone and Google Android and was languishing.
Then Microsoft partnered with Nokia and they developed a new Windows Mobile operating system for mobile. This OS is in the Lumia series of Nokia phones.
“While Lumia was not a barn burning success story like Apple and Google, it is still different and growing and that's better than other other competitors. So Microsoft see's a world where the three big competitors in the wireless space are Google, Apple and Microsoft,” says Kagan.
“The wireless business is starting to sound like the hamburger business with McDonalds, Burger King and Wendy's. It will be interesting to watch how Nokia changes now that it will be owned by Microsoft. Will it succeed and grow more rapidly, or will it continue to struggle with a slow growth pattern,” says Kagan.
“It looks like wireless customers have a choice between operating systems let by Google, Apple and Nokia. As well as smaller other options. What comes next will be interesting to watch,” says Kagan.
