The title of the book stands for “Intuition, Observation, Imagination, Opinion” and addresses a myriad of compelling issues in today’s world. “It has a trove of new ideas for the astute individual,” says Hyman. “It has educational value. It provides food for a hungry mind, and it provides a revival plan for our deteriorating civilization.”
I.O.-I.O. opens with the birth of a human child and asks readers to ponder the surroundings and conditions that await this new life. Hyman addresses current events, including the state of the natural environment and the uncontrolled growth of the human population. Searching for solutions, he discusses the pros and cons of controversial options, including euthanasia and abortion.
Hyman questions humanity’s larger purpose in the scheme of the universe and dissects the human structures of religion and government. He suggests the possibility that everything is part of a master design, from the smallest particles to whole galaxies. Hyman warns that straying from this design could lead to the annihilation of the entire human race, unless people are able to drastically shift their perspectives.
This book offers unique solutions that the author says will create happiness on Earth. Hyman suggests a plan to establish an international institute and form one country for the entire world, abolishing the need for territorial expansion, war and terrorism. “We must change our entire philosophy of living, not just for the benefit of one, but for the benefit for all,” he says. “The world is constantly changing; we must change to adjust. … (I.O.-I.O.) offers the solution.”
Hyman grew up during the Great Depression, excelling in mathematics and reading despite having dyslexia. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Commerce and enlisted in the United States Air Force during World War II. After his discharge from active service, he returned to Baltimore to find that his father’s health was seriously impaired, so Hyman took over management of the family business. After 38 years, he liquidated the business and formed a purchasing corporation with his wife, Paulyne, and his son, Steve. I.O.-I.O. is Hyman’s first book.
