New Book Offers Moms-to-be Peek into Non-Textbook Realities of Motherhood

The rate drops to 61.3% at 3 months and 47.2% at 6 months. According to a survey by the Department of Health and Human Services, only 36% of new mothers are exclusively breastfeeding at 3 months and this declines to 16.3% at 6 months.
Hopefully, by catching a glimpse of the non-textbook realities of motherhood, expectant moms will be better prepared to deal with the unexpected when their bundle of joy arrives and they start nursing.
So, what are some of the non-textbook realities?
Apart from dealing with the sleep deprivation and physical exhaustion of motherhood, the reality of nursing a newborn in her life often brings about emotional challenges arising from:
- renewing intimacy in the new mother’s relationship with her husband/partner/father of her child,
- managing social pressures from her extended circle of family and friends, and
- dealing with her own internal guilt if she is unable to continue breastfeeding.
In line with the 2013 World Breastfeeding Week theme ‘Breastfeeding Support: Close to Mothers’, the book also highlights the importance of having a solid support structure from the new mother’s husband/partner/father of her child, family and friends while she is nursing ... and how the lack thereof can impact her ability to continue breastfeeding her child in the months to come.
