Fourth Annual Otis Kite Festival at Santa Monica Beach: Family Event
Santa Monica, CA (PRWEB) April 01, 2015 -- Otis College of Art and Design will host its fourth Annual Kite Festival adjacent to the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday, April 11, 2015, 10am - 4pm. The event is free and open to the public. Parking is $12 for all day access.
Headlining a day of flying kites and other inflatables will be world-renowned kite artists Tyrus Wong, George Peters, Melanie Walker, Jose Sainz, Ali Fujino, and Ron Gibian.
A special workshop for kids focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) will integrate California Common Core requirements in Science with instruction in Art and Design. Kids will learn about the physics of flight, climate and wind, sustainable materials, and color theory while designing and decorating their own unique kites.
The Kite Festival was developed by Otis College of Art and Design’s Creative Action Program to bring families and communities throughout the Los Angeles region together for a fun-filled day of learning, creating art, and kite flying. This year, with generous support from the Hearst Foundations, Drachen Foundation, Art4Moore, the Tides Foundation, and the Home Depot, Otis has secured the funds and supplies to deliver a fantastic community event that will include educational workshops, painting, kite design and flying, and a special plein air drawing workshop.
“This event is perfect for the whole family,” says Richard Shelton, Director of Creative Action at Otis College of Art and Design. “Kids will have the opportunity to learn about the physics of flight while working on their own creations, adults can enjoy a plein air drawing lesson, and everyone can watch some truly inspiring kites take to the skies.”
Wini Jackson—celebrated advocate in service to children – has pledged her support and time to include kids from group homes, county facilities, public schools, treatment centers, and special needs homes throughout Los Angeles. All leftover supplies donated for the event will be given to Urban Compass in Watts.
In past years, Otis Kite Festivals have included children from the organizations Urban Compass, Junior Blind of America, Children’s Bureau, and St. Jude’s Hospital.
The festival will take place directly north of the Santa Monica Pier, parking will be provided at the Santa Monica Pier Parking Lot for a fee of $12. Parking is available at public city lots and at the Pier. Entrance to the kite festival is free.

ABOUT THE CREATIVE ACTION PROGRAM
The Creative Action Program at Otis College of Art and Design offers project-based courses that match multidisciplinary teams of students with local and international community partners. Creative Action courses introduce students to pressing environmental and social issues through partnerships with nonprofit organizations and public agencies. Through research, leadership, and collaboration, students focus their creativity on real-world problems. These skills are essential to the career of an artist or designer.
