Diving with sharks is not the only event at this July festival near Cancun, and Krystal Cancun Timeshare shares the highlights.

When the pool bar becomes old hat and travelers are tanned to perfection, what else is there to do in Cancun this summer? Krystal Cancun Timeshare has found an event that will bring some excitement back to a Mexican vacation.

Take a trip just 8 miles off the coast of Cancun to Isla Mujeres for the family-friendly Whale Shark Festival, which takes place from July 18-24. The festival features dances, local cuisine, goods from nearby businesses and works from local artisans. Krystal Cancun Timeshare says there will also be opportunities for sport fishing, diving and snorkeling along the island’s pristine reefs.

Of course, the main draw of the festival is swimming with whale sharks, the largest fish in the world and an endangered species. These gentle giants visit Isla Mujeres, part of the world's second largest barrier reef system, from May through September. Typically there may be hundreds of whale sharks in the waters; as many as 420 were sighted in one day. The sharks are attracted to the high plankton populations in the waters surrounding the island.

Krystal Cancun Timeshare says tourists visiting the festival can feel good knowing that the proceeds go to The Blue Realm Project, an organization dedicated to the monitoring, study and conservation of the pelagic organisms in the Mexican Atlantic. Proceeds also go to Amigos de Isla Contoy, a 501c3 non-profit working to advance education on sustainable marine conservation and ecotourism in the region.

Just a 15-minute ferry ride from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is small enough to be easily explored in just one day. Visitors to the festival can also stop by the island’s downtown area, located on the northern end of Isla Mujeres. Playa Norte (North Beach) is considered the best beach on the island, while on the southern end of the island travelers will find the Garrafón Reef Park. Krystal Cancun Timeshare says this has been a popular tourist destination for snorkeling and scuba diving. The park also features the ruins of a Mayan temple, a sea turtle sanctuary and a lighthouse.
