Lead sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor took 18 months and 120 tons of concrete, sand, and gravel to create this environmentally friendly project. Taylor and five other Mexican artists created their sculptures with pH-neutral marine concrete and some corals were planted both on and nearby the initial sculptures. Any possibly harmful chemicals on the statues were washed off before they were placed underwater so as not to harm the water, animals or reef.
The statues of this collection, Krystal Cancun Timeshare says, show humans interacting with the environment around them in two different ways:
1. How humans can live with nature and make a workable future between the two
2. How humans have damaged nature and the coral reefs, and show no sympathy
DeCaires Taylor made each statue of this artificial reef to resemble members of a local fishing community. The statues range from a little girl looking up to the surface to six business men with their heads in the sand. The idea is for the statues to show some humans actually seeing and embracing the surroundings while others pay no attention.
The best part is that the appearance of the sculptures is meant to change over time as the coral grows and marine life colonies thrive. According to Krystal Cancun Timeshare, this means that if a person visits the museum once a year, it may look a bit different each time. Already some of the figures are covered with algae. Others statues have some beautiful reef formations that distort their facial features into something surreal.
