Writers of the Future Contest Winner From 1986 Howard V. Hendrix PhD in English Literature, not Only Writes Science Fiction but Science Fact
Hollywood, CA (PRWEB) August 14, 2013 -- "I was working on my PhD in English Literature when one of my fellow graduate students handed me a note on which he'd written some basic details from a flyer he had seen in the Creative Writing Program office at University of California, Riverside -- for something called the Writers of the Future contest," Howard V. Hendrix said. The rest, as they say, is history. He went on to win first place for his story "In the Smoke" back in 1986 which was Volume II in the series.
"A quarter of a century after writing that winning story, however, I can in all honestly say that I would not have gone on to publish six novels and fifty short stories had it not been for the rocket-assisted takeoff the Writers of the Future Contest lit under my writing career. For that I am forever grateful."
Hendrix has published fifty short stories and numerous political essays, book reviews and works of literary criticism. His novels include "Spears of God", "The Labyrinth Key", "Empty Cities of the Full Moon", "Lightpaths", "Standing Wave" and "Better Angels".
"The Encyclopedia of Mars" is Hendrix's current project and his call to writers interested in participating states: "this will be the first definitive general reference work to address all major aspects of Mars: the science concerning the planet, physical features of the planet, exploration of it by humans, the planet's appearances in mythology and folklore through the ages, and modern treatments of the Red Planet in popular culture, literature and media."
"The Encyclopedia of Mars" will feature more than 600 entries. Approximately forty percent of these entries will emphasize scientific topics and sixty percent will emphasize cultural topics. Popular culture entries will examine the history of Mars on film, on radio, on TV, and in more recent electronic media. Entries will also examine the greatest possible range of global scientific, historical, Western and Non-Western mythological, genre and literary fiction materials concerning Mars. "TEoM" will also present biographical entries for those scientists, authors, and filmmakers who have made substantial contributions to our evolving understanding of Mars."
