Founded in 1973 by Tony Collier, the Los Angeles Food Bank has expanded to meet the increasing needs of those who are less fortunate. In so doing, Collier and the Los Angeles Food Bank have distributed over one billion pounds of food. Despite these tremendous humanitarian efforts, Collier remained humble in his cause, stating, “we’re trying to supply a basic need.” Together with Southern California Edison (SCE), the Los Angeles Food Bank recently provided 1,000 food packages for low-income seniors.
As a volunteer, Lee Trotman saw firsthand the value in the Los Angeles Food Bank’s mission, referencing the lessons of his family as the impetus for his volunteer work, saying, “As far back as I can remember, my family taught me to serve others and put them before yourself. For many people, if the Food Bank doesn't exist, they don't eat. That thought alone breaks my heart.” Lee Trotman, an employee with Southern California Edison (SCE), was a part of the volunteer effort that packaged the food supplies for seniors to be delivered all over the Los Angeles area.
Southern California Edison’s support of the Los Angeles Food Bank’s cause does not end with the supply of volunteers. The power company also allows Incredible Edible Park, run by Second Harvest Coordinator Sam Caruthers, to grow and harvest fruits and vegetables on a previously unused 8-acre plot. The land is located under power lines and was in need of a great deal of maintenance, but is now a helpful source of food. According to Caruthers, “Anything we pick normally gets out on somebody’s plate within about four days.”
