National Day of Remembrance honors those killed, injured or emotionally devastated by drunk and drugged driving and underage drinking consequences,” said Dow. “But it is also important to remember that during the holidays, which typically go hand-in-hand with drinking, to be extra cautious throughout the entire month of December as drunk-driving accidents are usually exponentially higher during this time of year.”

In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the daily death toll from drunk-driving crashes is highest during the holiday season. The U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism further reports that 40 percent of traffic-related deaths during Christmas and New Year’s involve drunk drivers, which is a 12-percent increase over the rest of the month of December.

“These statistics are alarming, but can easily be reduced by simply refraining from drunk driving,” said Dow. “When you get behind the wheel intoxicated, you are not only endangering your own life but the lives of others, and the trauma and financial cost of a drunk-driving accident or arrest is staggering.”

The surest way to prevent others from driving while intoxicated, adds Dow, is to simply take their keys. Subsequently, you will effectively be stopping them in their tracks, while possibly saving their life and the lives of others.
