New Novel Set During Vietnam War Finds Young Woman Struggling to Establish Her Place in the World
(PRWEB) April 18, 2017 -- EDMONDS, Wash. – It is 1965 and 19-year-old Sheila Gallagher is grateful to have finally escaped her dysfunctional family and married her high school sweetheart, Jim. But a few months after their arrival in Long Beach, Jim is deployed to Vietnam. When he finally returns, Jim shocks her with his decision to re-enlist, prompting their divorce.
Now alone, Sheila embarks on a journey of self-discovery where she participates in anti-war demonstrations and searches for the courage to pursue her dreams. But in a time of great political and cultural change, she is about to discover that a worthwhile goal can be difficult to achieve.
“Making It Work: A Novel” (published by Archway Publishing) is author Kathleen Glassburn’s debut novel. Set during the Vietnam War era, the book explores the timeless theme of the conviction it takes to pursue one’s dreams. Sheila’s story is told across 10 years; despite her many setbacks, she remains determined to make a difference in people’s lives through the power of music.
“There are always people who have to work extra hard in order to find their place in the world,” says Glassburn. “Goals are important and no matter how difficult they are to attain the effort is worthwhile.”
