Maria Cruickshank Relays Experience Working in UN Agency
Toowoomba, Australia (PRWEB) June 05, 2014 -- Inspired by her travels as a United Nations representative, Maria Cruickshank’s new book “Not for Granted: My Experience Working with International Organizations” (published by Balboa Press) describes the conflict, beauty and experience of living in countries like Cambodia, Macedonia and Sierra Leone.
Within her new memoir, Cruickshank details her travels to some of the most beautiful, interesting and dangerous places on Earth. Her work with international organizations brought her to Cambodia, where she worked in the field for the first time. There, she experienced an ever-growing fear of the existing Khmer Rouge – a group responsible for the mass genocide of nearly two million Cambodians between the years of 1975 and 1979.
As time passed, she came to visit Sierra Leone on October 1, 2005, the same day the bombings of Bali began. She found herself torn between risking her life on a ferry ride from the Lungi Airport to the mainland of Sierra Leone, or taking a U.N. helicopter to her destination.
All of these experiences in the field made Cruickshank realize the power of reflection and empathy for others’ situations.
“Today’s society travels for business or for pleasure,” Cruickshank says. “Usually those travels take them to holiday places for a short time. My book takes the readers to places where they would rarely travel.”
