Dr. Marsha W. Snyder’s New Book Helps Readers Live Purposeful Lives
HELLERTOWN, Pa. (PRWEB) February 23, 2015 -- It is no secret that physicians’ primary duty is to care for the public. Author and psychiatrist Marsha W. Snyder has spent the last 20-plus years caring for the caregivers; she treats other physicians and professionals.
Snyder brings her extensive research and first-hand experience to readers with her new book, “Positive Health: Flourishing Lives, Well-Being in Doctors” (published by Balboa Press), which argues for teaching both physicians and the public how to stay healthy and prevent ill-being through the practice of positive health, a body of science that is an offspring of positive psychology.
Snyder believes the current model of physician education lacks a focus on human understanding and overall wellness and thriving, something she says must change. She says physicians must master and focus on skills and practices such as resilience, meaning and purpose, professionalism, positive emotions and relationships. Doctors will then teach these skills to their patients. According to Snyder, studies show the mastery of these skills and their incorporating into daily life leads to a longer, happier, more productive and satisfying life and decreased episodes of illness.
Throughout her book, Snyder argues that a physician’s success begins with their own personal health and wellness. By practicing healthy lifestyles and implementing wellness programs into their own lives, she believes they will take better care of their patients, have less stressful work environments and make fewer errors.
“Medicine must change,” Snyder says. “Quality of care in the United States is relatively poor compared to the money spent on healthcare. To change this we must change physician education and teach the public to stay healthy.”
