Michael Nathanson Announces Release of ‘Between Myth & Mandate’
San Jose, CA (PRWEB) November 22, 2013 -- In “Between Myth and mandate: Geopolitics, Pseudohistory and the Hebrew Bible," author Michael Nathanson’s new historical text, takes a critical look at the Hebrew Bible to show the readers that the Bible cannot, and therefore should not be relied upon to construct a credible history of the Jews before 400-300 BCE.
Arguing that the significance of the Bible to the Jewish people lies not in the pseudohistorical content of the Genesis to Nehemiah narratives, but instead in the historical context of their authoring, Nathanson shows readers that under the guise of historiography, the authors of the Bible offered an apocalyptic rationale for the calamities that befell, and were yet to befall, the Judaeans.
The author states that in apocalyptic terms, these “calamities were the punitive stage in but the latest of many cycles of transgression --punishment--redemption.” Inevitably, the eschatological Promised Land belief would clash with the realities of the modern Near East.
An excerpt from “Between Myth & Mandate”:
“The importance of the Biblical narratives lies in the clues they hold regarding who their authors were and when they wrote them. The answer to why they took it upon themselves to write these narratives require postbiblical contextualization that will bestow on them the meaning they deserve.”
