Mayor and Kenedi Treasure to Reward Essay Winners Mindless Behavior Tickets Plus Thanksgiving Dinner
Detroit, Michigan (PRWEB) October 15, 2013 -- In an effort to encourage youth to open their minds, push literacy through writing and reward young citizens, Highland Park Mayor Deandre Windom and Kenedi Treasure have teamed up to host a city wide essay contest. Coveted prizes include the Mayor personally delivering a Thanksgiving feast for six families provided by K.I.T.E (Konnecting the Incarcerated Through Excellence) and Kenedi Treasure plus tickets to the Mindless Behavior teen celebrity party featuring Black Nativity star and singer Jacob Latimore plus YMCMB’s Torion Sellers skate party and meet and greet.
The VIP Mindless Holiday is set for November 30, 2013 at 6p.m. at Skate World of Troy on 2825 Maple Road. Tickets are on sale at http://www.welovemindless.com.
The teenprenuers behind the project, Kenedi and Treasure Bishop are excited about the event as it marks a homecoming of sorts. They were born in Detroit but relocated to Atlanta where they have become known for their brand of teen cosmetics, celebrity teen parties and more. Most recently, one of the sisters was awarded a Proclamation from the City of Atlanta.
“We are excited to come back and have so many of our family, friends and whole city support us,” said 18 year-old Treasure Bishop. “It’s a great feeling to see that our efforts are being recognized. Most importantly, it’s a reminder that our dad gave us to never forget who we are and where we came from.”
The only rule, she explained, is that entrants must attend a Highland Park Public School and the essay contest is open to students between the ages of 9 and 18.
“Contestants must write a one page essay of at least 500 words on the topic ‘The Reason Why I Love The City of Highland Park’. They must include one fun fact about the city, say what they would do to better the community if they were Mayor,” she said. “You can contact your school to find out more information.”
“They will be judged based on proper grammar, excellent spelling, style, originality, creativity and content,” added 16 year-old Kenedi. “Basically, we and Mayor Windom will be looking for the most well thought out essay. It’s a great chance to show how much you love your city. Sure we want the event to be a major thing but after the event is over Highland Park is still home and we have to work together to make it awesome. I was raised in Highland Park and went to George Washington Carver and Henry Ford Academy schools before I moved to Atlanta so this is really personal for me. ”
The sisters also confirmed that there are discounted tickets for those who bring toys to the event which will be distributed through non-profit K.I.T.E. They explained K.I.T.E is the main beneficiary of their events because their family knows first-hand what it is like to have one parent in jail. Despite being in jail, they stated, parents still can be a positive voice to their kids. With K.I.T.E, when their kids come to visit them for the holidays, they will have something to put in their hand.
The quartet known as Mindless burst onto the music scene back in 2008 with hits such as My Girl and have sealed their spot as the ‘it’ R&B boy band of their generation. Touring with the likes of the Backstreet Boys and Justin Bieber plus being sole opening act for Janet Jackson's 2011 tour further confirms the young hitmakers’ place in music, further recognized when they won the BET Awards Coca Cola's Viewer's Choice Award.
Meanwhile, Latimore has several hits under his belt but has made a successful transition into acting. Previews for his upcoming film Black Nativity already has critics hailing him as a true crossover talent playing alongside Hollywood heavyweights Jenifer Hudson, Angela Bassett, Forrest Whittaker, Mary J.Blige, Tyrese Gibson and Nasir Jones.
