In “Under their Claws: A Testimony of My Kidnapping” (published by Trafford Publishing), author Myriam Norton’s new biography, readers are taken into a frightening period of Norton’s life, when she was kidnapped and held by Colombian FARC terrorists.
While visiting her Colombian farm, a place where she cultivated plants for her landscaping business, Norton found herself held at gunpoint by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. She was quickly drugged and taken on horseback on a two-day ride into the wilderness to one of FARC’s camps for kidnapped victims. At the camp, she fought daily to survive. With armed guards and a ransom well over anything anyone in her family could pay, Norton learned how to live with terror and fear daily.
Throughout the book, readers will live what she went through as she takes them through a detailed chronicle that sheds light on the gruesome reality that many thousands of Colombians have suffered. “The book is a portrayal of my struggle to stay alive; this experience left me vivid memories of my captors and the other hostages, along with the negotiation process I reveal facts that have never been told,” she says. “I recreate an unforgettable scenario that transports you to a place where life is worth very little and survival is not guaranteed.”
An excerpt from “Under their Claws”:
Simón, the ‘COMANDANTE’ in charge of our group, was about 23 years old. He was a short, thin man with three of his front teeth missing. Two days after my arrival he came to my tent carrying a notebook and pen and told me the ‘FARC High Authorities’ needed information about my financial status.
My companions, Federico and Manuel, had already given me a crash course in preparation for this first interview. They advised me to tell the truth, stick to the questions, and never volunteer extra information.
“Always keep in mind, with no exceptions, that we are only a sum of money to these guys. You and I know that no one’s going free if the family doesn’t pay. They´ve done their homework, they know exactly what you own,” they said.
Simon’s interview began - “I hear ya’re a damn rich woman - so, what’ve we got?”
