Women may not make up the majority of the work force in the construction industry, but that does not mean they are not entitled to a safe work environment.

A new blog article on the website of the Ginarte O’Dwyer Gonzalez Gallardo & Winograd law firm, titled “Women in Construction Face Unique Safety Issues,” calls attention to the issue of the unique safety issues encountered by women working in the construction field.

The blog article outlines a new joint effort between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Association of Women in Construction to address the health and safety issues that confront women who work on construction sites.

“Women may not make up the majority of the work force in the construction industry, but that does not mean they are not entitled to a safe work environment,” said Joseph A. Ginarte, founder of Ginarte O’Dwyer Gonzalez Gallardo & Winograd, a law firm that concentrates on construction and workplace injury claims in New York and New Jersey. “Employers, and in particular construction companies because of the dangerous nature of the work, have a responsibility to provide a safe work environment, including ensuring that workers have access to proper safety equipment.”

The blog post points out that OSHA and the National Association of Women in Construction have identified two key issues faced by women in the construction industry — problems with personal protective equipment (PPE) and a shortage of women’s sanitation facilities on work sites.

PPE must fit well to provide adequate protection, but most safety equipment is designed for men and does not provide a proper fit for women. The blog points out that employers are responsible for providing equipment that will keep all workers safe and ideally, they should purchase safety gear designed specifically for women.

The other concern stems from construction site restrooms that might have unsanitary conditions or other issues such as non-working locks. The blog states that employers have a responsibility to make sure all workers have access to sanitary, safe facilities.

The firm’s website provides additional information on how injured workers may receive compensation through New York and New Jersey construction accident lawsuits. Ginarte said it is important for injured persons to speak with an attorney with experience in this area, such as those at his firm.

“At Ginarte O’Dwyer Gonzalez Gallardo & Winograd, we have more than 150 years of combined experience and have successfully represented construction workers who were injured on the job. We will take the time to review your case and help you pursue all avenues to recover the money you deserve,” he said.
