David Perecman Weighs In On Flying Saw Blade Accident Near Manhattan Construction Site
New York, New York (PRWEB) June 05, 2014 -- A pedestrian was injured in an accident near a construction site in Manhattan. Workers were cutting the street with a construction saw blade when it came loose and went flying 100 feet through the air. The blade, which is about 3-feet wide, struck a woman walking on the sidewalk, reported CBS News (5.28.14).
“Construction sites pose many serious risks and this was an unusual accident. However, if proper safety procedures and guidelines are adhered to then accidents, even uncommon ones, can be avoided,” said David Perecman, founder of [The Perecman Firm.
The incident was captured in surveillance video which could be viewed on the CBS website. In the video, the giant saw blade could be seen flying through the air. CBS News reported that the blade hit a tree and then the woman after it got loose. The woman suffered a deep gash in her leg. The video showed the woman falling to the pavement.
Less than 24 hours after the woman was hurt, the city lifted a stop work order at the construction site at 9th Avenue near 48th Street after inspecting all the machines. The machine that caused the accident was removed. Its blade was used to cut through concrete. According to CBS News, construction workers have been updating the underground water mains in the area for the past two years.
The accident, which was referred to as a “freak accident” by CBS News, was under investigation by the New York City Department of Design and Construction.
“This kind of construction accident should not happen and to dismiss it as a freak accident may open the door for it to happen again,” said Perecman. “A thorough investigation is needed.”
