David Perecman Weighs in on Brooklyn Bridge Wall Collapse Likely Caused by Storm
New York, New York (PRWEB) July 09, 2014 -- Five people were injured when a stone façade crumbled beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. The partial collapse took place during a thunderstorm that brought lightening and flooding, reported CBS News (7.3.14).
The victims, all members of one family, were treated for minor injuries, CBS News said. They were waiting under the overpass when the façade fell.
“Wall collapse accidents, like this one, are usually due to damage that took place gradually, with changes that are mostly invisible to the eye. Weather is frequently to blame for this type of accident,” said Attorney at Law David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm. “Over time, water from snow, rain, or melting ice, can seep into the concrete and ultimately weaken it from within.”
The New York City Department of Transportation investigated the bridge following the accident. Officials determined that the wall was a decorative façade and not a retaining wall, meaning the structural integrity of the bridge was unaffected, reported CBS News. The city department will conduct a full inspection of the entire façade.
“Negligent maintenance can easily lead to injuries or death,” said Perecman. “Hazards need to be fixed before another accident occurs.”
The accident occurred at Prospect and Washington streets in Brooklyn, near an exit ramp.
