Author, Nancy Bromley, recognizes that the story of the Nativity has been retold in multiple forms for centuries. Inspired by the works of Jill Eggleton and Julia Donaldson, Bromley retells the Christmas story using elements of rhyme, repetition and prediction in “Away in a Stable” (published by Trafford Publishing).

Bromley's rhyming version of the Christmas story, allows the reader to predict who is coming to visit the stable next through the verse and clues in the intricate artwork. The whole cast of characters ends up assembled for the big event.

Bromley believes that “Away in a Stable” is an essential way to teach children how to read. “The rhyming and rhythmical nature of the verses is fun. It also makes the story easy for new readers to ‘memorize’ so they feel like they are reading,” the author says.

An excerpt from the book reads:
Away in a stable on a night dark and deep, a tiny little mouse was about to go to sleep. All of a sudden, “creak” went the door and he jumped up from his spot on the floor.
