New York, NY (PRWEB) September 05, 2013
The last time the New York Jets started a rookie quarterback in a regular season game was in 2009 when Mark Sanchez began his career, until now. On Sunday, September 8, 2013, the Jets will start rookie quarterback Geno Smith out of West Virginia against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It is Mark Sanchez that Smith will be replacing. Sanchez will remain on a “day to day” watch with a shoulder injury, but if Smith plays well in the season opener, it is no telling if and when Sanchez will get his starting job back. Sanchez has been the starting quarterback for the Jets organization since his debut in 2009, and although has not faltered too much, it was clear that the team was looking for a change. Depending on how his shoulder heels and how Smith performs, it is possible Sanchez may never play for the Jets again.
In the last preseason game of 2013, the New York Jets defeated the Philadelphia Eagles by one touchdown, in a score of 27-20. Behind Sanchez and Smith, Matt Simms proved he deserves to be third string quarterback for the team. In the game against the Eagles, Simms led four scoring drives, and showed himself and everyone else he is worthy, as he played the entire game. Simms completed 33 of 44 passes for 285 yards with no touchdowns, but no interceptions either.
The Jets have played well in their preseason games, winning 3 of 4. They have beat the Jaguars, Giants, and Eagles, but lost in their first game to the Lions. Sunday will be their first regular season game, and an exciting one it will be. Other important games for the team’s 2013 season include ones against the New England Patriots, the Atlanta Falcons, and the Baltimore Ravens.
