An excerpt from “Nick’s Story”:
I was the only recruit as I sat on a bench in the back of a truck, with an M1 rifle between my knees. I had never held a real gun or rifle in my life, and having one thrust at me was absolutely intimidating, even though I knew that it was not loaded. I remember the oily smell and feel of the rifle. It appeared to be well worn with nicks and deep scratches all over the stock, and I wondered if it had ever been fired in anger.
