The National Health Service estimates that one person in a hundred suffers from schizophrenia. Families and friends of sufferers are also deeply affected. In her new book, “Adrift: Completely At Sea With Paranoid Schizophrenia” (published by AuthorHouse) author Nicki Adams, whose husband suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, offers support and understanding to sufferers and their families with her true account.
Set between 1973 and 1983, “Adrift” recounts the harrowing tale of the disintegration of a happy marriage. After several years of normal family life Adams' husband, Vincent, starts showing signs of schizophrenia including depression, confusion and paranoia.
As Adams tries to understand and help her husband cope, Vincent adamantly refuses treatment and his condition worsens. When he becomes violent, Adams fears for her young children’s safety as well as her own. Her husband’s abuse forces her to make a crucial decision.
Through “Adrift” Adams hopes to promote further understanding of the condition. She shows the harsh reality faced by families who attempt to support a loved one with schizophrenia.
“The book aims to show the vital role played by family support services which were sadly lacking in the story,” Adams says. “It also aims to break down social stigma surrounding mental illness through improved understanding of this baffling condition.”
