New play ‘A Handshake With Change’ examines social injustice
LAGOS, Nigeria (PRWEB) September 15, 2014 -- After witnessing a girl begging for alms being mocked, author ‘Niyi Jacqueline Ojo began writing her new play, “A Handshake With Change” (published by Trafford Publishing), a play that offers social commentary alongside a dramatic plot.
Aisha is a strong-willed 7-year-old girl considered stubborn and even evil by her father. Aisha and her family are migrants from the Sahara and must beg to make a living. Aisha is constantly infuriating her father by suggesting other ways of making money without the shame of begging. Aisha will never stop believing in a better future, though, and she will do whatever it takes to make it a reality.
An excerpt from “A Handshake With Change”:
“Tahir: Shut up! You brainless child! (Aisha whimpers. He causes passers-by to stare at them. Tahir is obviously too angry to bother) I don’t blame you. It’s your shameless mother who pampers you stupidly I blame (Aisha whimpers more). Besides I’d always known your ill-timed birth as we journeyed through the desert to Nigeria was a sign of a never-do-well (whimpers give way to loud tears). Now move before I . . . (Aisha runs away in tears among the passers-by, startling and irritating some. Loud sobs trailing her into the distance). Stupid child! (Spits in disgust and hurries on).”
