Scientel® Gensonix NoSQL DB Named Polymorphic Database at the NoSQL 2014 Conference
San Jose, CA (PRWEB) September 30, 2014 -- Today customers are having to deploy different types of databases for different types of applications. This is especially true—and troublesome--in view of constantly-increasing/evolving Big Data environments.
One general methodology is to deploy SQL for structured data, NoSQL for unstructured data, and Hadoop for storage. As virtually everyone acknowledges, this is cumbersome and expensive, and requires digging out sometimes tremendous amounts of data from Hadoop (or other storage), then doing something with it. Real-time requirements today add yet another layer of complexity. MPP may be required for very high speed processing of massive amounts of data as well.
Due to this complexity and the array of products available today, many customers resort to just scaling their existing DB to its limits or adding a second or third, then do ETL processing to shuttle data back and forth between the required platforms. This is costly, complex and confusing.
A group of consultants were set on finding an answer to this confusion as they painstakingly compared the various multifaceted products lined up at this year’s NoSQL NOW! Conference that took place on August 19-21 in San Jose, Ca.
They noticed Scientel with its 7 key features namely: Multi-modeling, Document stores, NSQL Language, SQL queries, Transaction Tables with OLTP, MPP on HPC and Ultra-High Speed. However, they were surprised to note that other systems did not provide all seven capabilities in a single DB! This helped them to identify that Gensonix is truly a polymorphic DB—this so was stated at this conference.
Polymorphism is the ability of an entity to behave like more than 1 of its counter parts given a set of circumstances or criteria; or, the provision of a single interface (a shared boundary across which separate components of a computer system exchange information) to entities of different types. In other words, in a polymorphic DB, you can use a relational approach when that is appropriate, hierarchical when that is, and so on. No one paradigm is fully implemented, but the DB uses enough of the features/capabilities needed to provide a reasonable solution to a problem.
Gensonix here not only supports the seven features named above in a single DB, but it also can behave like another in other instances.
An example is the ability of Gensonix to support tables which is unlike other NoSQL DBs. This allows Gensonix to support full SQL queries right out of its NoSQL DB. This allows customers to develop queries and reports in SQL or Gensonix NSQL language.
A second example is the ability of Gensonix to apply different data models simultaneously depending on the application requirements. To solve a bill of materials explosion problem, Gensonix emulates a graph DB by combining its network model with a relational model allowing it to perform row joins instead of table joins. This not only eliminates the deep level join complexity, but at the same time improves performance by several orders of magnitude. It also eliminates the necessity of choosing a basic data model and allows you to focus instead on the problems you are trying to solve and the kinds of bottom-line information you need fastest and most cost-effectively.
Another example may be where you want to deal with a set of geographical entities, such as cities; airports; navigation transmitters; points of interest (buildings; highways; etc.); and so on. These can easily be handled within a polymorphic/dynamically-flexible NoSQL DB such as Gensonix. The normal object-oriented approach would be to create a base class (e.g., “Location”) with all the properties these have in common (unique id, latitude, longitude, elevation, name, description, etc.) and then create subclasses adding additional information for each one (such as frequencies for transmitters, or airport identifiers). The SQL approach, on the other hand, is to repeat the information in four separate tables. NoSQL eliminates the intermediate tables and allows much faster processing and more efficient storage.
Gensonix’s ability to emulate different data models simultaneously in a single DB application makes it behave like multiple DB’s--hence the term polymorphic database.
