NovaTract Surgical, Inc. Announces U.S. Patent for Laparoscopic Dynamic Retractor
Madison, Conn. (PRWEB) October 21, 2014 -- NovaTract Surgical, Inc., a venture-backed startup medical device company announced today that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a patent for the design behind the company’s entry device, the NovaTract™ Laparoscopic Dynamic Retractor.
The recently-issued patent (U.S. Patent Number 8,852,088 B2) is the second in the company’s intellectual property portfolio and was issued for a laparoscopic retraction system that allows surgeons to manipulate and grasp tissue or organs without making additional incisions. With its exclusive tension-adjusting system and the ability to modify the angle of retraction internally, the NovaTract™ allows the advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgeon to achieve less invasive reduced-port surgeries without changing surgical technique.
With changing healthcare reform, surgeons, hospitals, and medical device companies are looking for ways to be more efficient and provide higher quality care to the patients they serve. The drive toward less invasive surgical procedures is more relevant now than ever. However, technical challenges and learning curves make the movement to less invasive procedures a challenge for some. The NovaTract™ was designed to aid in this transition.
“We are very pleased with the issuance of this patent representing the core of our company’s intellectual property,” said Eleanor L. Tandler, founder and chief executive officer of NovaTract Surgical, Inc. “The NovaTract™ has already proven to provide a unique and innovative clinical solution in many difficult procedures, offering improved visibility in the surgical field. We look forward to building our intellectual property portfolio with additional, procedure-enabling technology for the minimally invasive surgeon.”
The NovaTract™, intended for retraction of tissue, organs and other structures in general, colorectal, gynecologic, urologic, and robotic-assisted minimally invasive procedures, has been recognized by The Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS) as one of the 2013 Innovations of the Year and by Surgical Products Magazine which recognized the NovaTract™ Laparoscopic Dynamic Retractor in their fifth annual Excellence in Surgical Products Awards with second place in the instrumentation category. Both organizations recognized the device as an innovative technology, for its contribution to surgical performance, efficiency and safety.
