Author Don Hones Offers a Delightful and Exciting Adventure in New Fiction
OSHKOSH, Wis. Joey also becomes friends with children of the Peregrine, a wandering people skilled in music and healing. When the Peregrine’s homes are attacked and burned, Joey chooses to aid his friends on a desperate journey to free their families and tear down the wall separating two peoples.
This book offers stories that are action-packed, filled with dialogue, great for reading aloud and releasing the imagination. Each story deals with truths about how to live in the world with respect for others and oneself. For example, The Golden Deer introduces the concept of sacredness—that every place on Earth is sacred and should be respected. Finally, through his adventures Joey learns the importance of facing his own fears, and not giving into hatred.
The peregrines are persecuted because they are different. They are rounded up, deported or exploited for their labor. Unfortunately, these things still happen to many immigrants in many nations of the world. With the help of other members of the community, the Peregrines are able to overcome these injustices. These stories may remind readers of The Chronicles of Narnia or The Lord of the Rings. Unlike those books, these stories are shorter, with more leadership entrusted to the children themselves, and with less overt violence.
The author aims that On the Trail of Giants will help readers remember the magical quality of the world that is often present for children but many times forgotten by adults; and that, with true friends and perseverance and hope, great problems can be overcome.

About the Author
Don Hones grew up outside of Ypsilanti, Michigan, the ninth of eleven children. He has lived in several states, as well as in Ecuador and Spain. For many years he taught English, and currently is a professor at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. His children, Orion, Ariana, and Marcel, are the inspiration for the stories in ‘On The Trail of Giants’. He has written two books about immigration and education: Educating New Americans: Immigrant Lives and Learning with Lawrence Erlbaum Associates (with Shou Cha) and American Dreams, Global Visions: Dialogic Teacher Education with Immigrant and Refugee Families.
