TruDenta® Announces New Initiative to Educate Patients During National Pain Awareness Month
Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) September 10, 2014 -- Under-treatment of pain is a significant public health issue with far-reaching impact. With over 100 million people in the U.S. affected by chronic pain, it is no surprise that the societal burden of chronic pain is simply staggering. In 2012, the Institute of Medicine reported that the economic burden of pain exceeds $500 billion per year in the U.S., including healthcare utilization costs and lost workforce productivity.
The National Institutes of Health estimates that over 80 million Americans suffer from chronic headache, migraine, tinnitus, vertigo or TMJ/D. Headaches cost billions of dollars in lost productivity every year. There are more than 100 specific headache diagnoses; however, tension headaches account for nearly 90% of all headaches.
Tension headaches are very common and one of the most neglected and difficult types of headaches to treat. The pain often starts at the back of the head and moves forward so that it eventually includes the neck, scalp, and head. The constant head pressure is often described as feeling like a tight band across the head.
If headaches occur 15 or more days in a month for several months, they are considered chronic tension headaches. If they occur less frequently, they are called episodic tension headaches. Chronic tension headaches tend to be more common in females. Many people with chronic tension headaches have usually had the headaches for more than 60-90 days. The “severity” of a tension headache increases significantly with its frequency. Severe tension headaches can be just as painful as (and are often mistaken for) migraines.
Keeping a headache diary can help identify the source of your tension headaches and how you can change your environment and habits to avoid them. Download the headache diary and begin the journey to a healthier lifestyle.
While it’s common to try to control headaches through non-prescription medications, it’s important to use caution. Overuse of pain medication can cause rebound headaches, and for some people it can even worsen a headache. As with most things, the best treatment is prevention.
