Passages Malibu Marks Alcohol Awareness Month
Malibu, CA (PRWEB) April 01, 2014 -- Starting in 1987, The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) began sponsoring Alcohol Awareness Month to bring attention to alcohol-related issues and reduce the stigma associated with those dependent on the substance. Nearly three decades later, that effort continues, nationwide.
NCADD announced this year’s theme “Help for Today, Hope for Tomorrow,” and also published a list of crucial facts, relating to alcohol dependence in the US.
• Every day 7,000 young people take their first drink of alcohol.
• Nearly 2,000 college students perish each year, as a result of alcohol related injuries or accidents.
• Individuals who begin drinking before age 15 are 400% more likely to become dependent on alcohol compared to 21 year olds.
• Underage alcohol use costs the US roughly $62 billion each year.
NCADD highlighted their efforts to curb underage drinking by promoting Alcohol-Free Weekend between April 4th through the 6th.
“In our clinical experience at Passages, young people with unresolved traumatic experiences or mental health issues are particularly at risk for becoming dependent on alcohol,” said Pax Prentiss, CEO of Passages Addiction Treatment Centers. “As a father, I recognize the value in educating both parents and young people, so they can understand the risks associated with alcohol.”
NCADD’s Alcohol Awareness Month website offers clinical resources for both addition treatment professionals, as well as the members of the public.

About Passages Malibu & Passages Ventura:
Father and son team Chris and Pax Prentiss founded Passages Malibu in 2001. Its second location, Passages Ventura, first opened its doors in 2009. The two drug & alcohol abuse treatment centers offer an alternative to the 12 step/AA model of addiction treatment by utilizing a holistic program that focuses on the underlying issues of substance dependency, rather than attributing addiction to an incurable disease.
Both Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura accept insurance and each have earned the coveted Joint Commission (JCAHO) accreditation, which has only been given to 6% of the nation’s behavioral health treatment programs.
Passages Malibu was named the #1 treatment center in the world by Healthcare Global, one of the "Most Luxurious Places to Dry Out" by Forbes magazine, and the Huffington Post recently acknowledged Passages as a center that “caters to a high-end crowd, with many CEOs, entrepreneurs and high-powered professionals among its clients.”
The co-founders are also authors of an acclaimed series of addiction treatment books, including their groundbreaking, flagship title, The Alcoholism & Addiction Cure.
